Mental Health and Neuroscience

Objeticves
  • To improve the prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of severe mental disorders, cognitive impairment and neurobehavioural disorders. Promoting early diagnostic strategies and personalised therapeutic approaches for neurological and psychiatric disorders.
  • To improve the early diagnosis, treatment and prevention of cognitive and functional decline associated with chronic liver diseases (liver cirrhosis and metabolic and non-alcoholic steatohepatitis, MASLD), diabetes and major surgery. Identify mechanisms, therapeutic targets and biomarkers for the onset of such cognitive and functional decline, and design and test new diagnostic and therapeutic procedures to prevent or reverse its onset.
  • Develop translational research in neuroscience to better understand the molecular, cellular and brain network mechanisms involved in psychiatric and neurological disorders.
  • To study the interaction between genetic, epigenetic, environmental and social factors in the development of neuropsychiatric and neurodegenerative diseases.
  • To promote integrated models of comorbidity between neurological and psychiatric diseases (e.g. Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s with depression, cognitive impairment in patients with psychiatric disorders) to understand intersections and synergies.
