Research Group on Genetics of Osteoporosis
Metabolism and Organic Damage Area
Our group’s main objective is the identification of genes and genetic polymorphisms associated with bone phenotypes; mainly bone mineral density, as the main predictor of osteoporosis, and fragility fracture. We are also interested in the identification of miRNAs as biomarkers of fragility fracture and osteoarthritis, as well as the study of the metabolome in both pathologies. Our group has developed translational strategies from animal and cellular models to apply this knowledge to humans. Thus, we have worked with ovariectomized mice as a model of postmenopausal bone loss and with primary osteoblasts obtained from women with fragility fractures and severe osteoarthritis. In both models we have studied differentially expressed genes to obtain candidate genes for study in women. Finally, another objective of the group is the characterization of the type of chromosome duplication, its paternal/maternal origin, global gene expression and miRNAs in patients with chromosome 15 duplication inversion syndrome (Idic-15).
